About this page:

Since 1964, when they were signed to a major record label, Simon & Garfunkel began being marketed as entertainers. Over their careers, various promotional items have appeared advertising their work to the public, in several different formats: videos, posters, graphics, etc. This page highlights some of these items from my collection.

POSTERS

A Hazy Shade Of Winter (Billboard magazine, 29 October 1966)

This advertisement appeared in Billboard about the same time as the release of "A Hazy Shade of Winter" appeared on single, and only a few weeks after the release of Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. The A-side to the single wouldn't appear on an album for another year and a half (April 1968, when Bookends was released), but the cut of "For Emily" here would've been available on PSRT. Strange photo here of Simon and Garfunkel, with the two looking like they're holding hands, walking through a landscape that appears not to be at all reminiscent of late fall or early winter.

Bridge Over Troubled Water (Billboard magazine, ca. March 1971)

This advertisement undoubtedly came out after the 1971 Grammy Awards in March 1971, at which Simon & Garfunkel's album and single together took home these six top honors--the first among many awards the recordings have earned in the nearly forty years since their release. Of course, while the ad touts the records as artistic achievements (which they no doubt are), it's clear that their sales haven't been shabby either.

VIDEOS

Sing Out -- Canada TV Special 1966

Simon & Garfunkel appeared on Canadian television in early 1966 and performed several songs that they had just recorded for their new album Sounds of Silence, released that January. The audio feeds from these tracks can be found on the collection Village Vanguard, along with many other studio outtakes and live performances.

Monterey Pop Festival -- 1967

Simon & Garfunkel were filmed along with many other groups and performers(The Mamas and the Papas, Jimi Hendrix, etc.) when they played a short set for the crowd at the Monterey Pop Festival in California on 16 June 1967. There are several audio recordings of their performance, and the sound quality is pretty good. Here's the video of a few of their cuts.

Songs Of America -- US TV Special, 30 November 1969

Simon & Garfunkel filmed many of their live performances on tour as well as some studio rehearsals as footage to include in a TV special called Songs Of America, which was set to air on 30 November 1969 in the US. The show's obvious anti-Vietnam War undertones were not popular with the backers, including Bell Telephone, who eventually pulled out of their deal to sponsor the broadcast. Nonetheless, the show went on the air, and provides some otherwise unavailable glimpses of Simon & Garfunkel working in the recording studio, traveling, and running commentary by the duo, even in the final months of their partnership when tensions between them were mounting.
