About this page:

Simon & Garfunkel reunited in 1981 for a free concert in New York City's Central Park that they released on an album the following year. That event marked the start of a two-year reunion tour during a lull in both of their solo careers. Creative differences forced them apart for the fourth time in 1983, and except for occasional concert tours together, the two have largely worked independently since. Much of the material on this page, therefore, consists either of live recordings from after 1980 or compilations of earlier recordings into larger sets, many of which Simon & Garfunkel fans will find to be worth acquiring.

Set musicians: Gerry Niewood and Dave Tofani--saxophone; Steve Gadd and Grady Tate--drums; David Brown and Pete Carr--guitar; Richard Tee--keyboards; Anthony Jackson--bass; Rob Mounsey--synthesizer; John Gatchell and John Eckert--trumpets. Produced by Simon, Garfunkel, Phil Ramone and Roy Halee.

Simon & Garfunkel reunited for a free concert on 19 September 1981 in New York City's Central Park. Performed but not included on the album was "The Late, Great Johnny Ace," a song recently written by Simon in the wake of John Lennon's assassination. The concert was released in 1982 on VHS at the same time as the audio recording and has now been released on DVD. There are some slight differences between the two-LP release and the CD of the concert, as some between-song dialogue heard on the LP was inexplicably dropped from the digital format. This was the first live recording of Simon & Garfunkel to be officially released and for a very long time was the only one available anywhere. Some of the performances are very good cuts: "The Boxer," "American Tune," "Late In The Evening," "Slip Slidin' Away," "50 Ways," "Me And Julio," "Mrs. Robinson," and "April Come She Will" are the best on this set.

All of disc 1 and the first 5 tracks of disc 2 are from a concert given by Simon & Garfunkel as part of a short reunion tour in Osaka, Japan, on 7 May 1982. On disc 2, tracks 6-11 are from a BBC promotional radio show in 1965 done by Simon & Garfunkel upon the release of the UK-only EP Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.; tracks 12-23 are from a rehearsal for a show done by Paul Simon solo at Queens College, London, in 1964. These are some of the only recordings I have found by Simon of some of these tunes, and some of them, like "Gospel Ship" and "Pretty Boy Floyd," are well-done, if the sound quality is somewhat lacking. The last two tracks on disc 2 are Saturday Night Live performances from 18 November 1976. This is a somewhat difficult disc to locate, but the recordings are worth tracking down. Rudy Riet has a nice summary of the material and review of the recording on his excellent page, Song For The Asking: A Tribute To Simon & Garfunkel.

This is a live recording from Simon & Garfunkel's reunion tour in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It's a nice set, and though it's similar to The Concert In Central Park set, it's got a few extras that are rarely heard in a live setting, including "My Little Town," "Cecilia," and "El Condor Pasa." The sound quality is pretty nice; I'm not sure if there's a "label" that this recording has been released under.

A pretty worthwhile disc for tracking down. This has almost all of the most well-known tracks recorded by Simon and/or Garfunkel during their early careers. I'd highly recommend this to collectors who want a nice selection of Simon & Garfunkel recordings done under various pseudonyms. This is even better than Before The Fame or Two Can Dream Alone, in my opinion.

For those who just can't get enough of Simon and Garfunkel's early recording careers, there is the three-disc set Work In Progress. Apparently, someone hunted down what appears to be very close to all the studio demos and releases that Simon and/or Garfunkel made between about 1959 and 1963 and has compiled them onto this set. It's pretty clear from listening why lots of these selections were never released--they're not material that would probably ever sell (until now, of course, when Paul Simon is a household name). So, judge for yourself whether this is a set worth getting. Among the best unreleased tracks here, in my opinion, are "Educated Fool," "That's How I Feel," "That Forever Kind Of Love," "Haven't You Hurt Me Enough," "Linstead Market," "My Best Friend," "When Mona Combs Her Hair," the demos of "Sparrow" and "He Was My Brother," and "Teen Age Blue." Each of the CDs comes with a nice booklet detailing Simon and Garfunkel's careers around this time.

Across America / Art Garfunkel
        US CD / 1996
        Hybrid HY 20001-2
Recorded live at Ellis Island, NY, NY, USA, 13 and 16 April 1996

Garfunkel's concert from Ellis Island in 1996 is worth picking up; even if you only like the Paul Simon compositions, he does a good job covering them solo here. James Taylor appears for a duet on the second track, and oddly, Garfunkel brings his son on stage with him for "Feelin' Groovy"...some people might think it's cute, but you can judge how you like the recording. Otherwise, "A Heart In New York" and "Bright Eyes" head the list of Garfunkel solo material here.

1. A Heart In New York
2. Crying In The Rain
3. Scarborough Fair
4. A Poem On The Underground Wall
5. Homeward Bound
6. All I Know
7. Bright Eyes
8. El Condor Pasa (If I Could)
9. Bridge Over Troubled Water
10. Mrs. Robinson
11. The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)
12. I Will
13. April Come She Will
14. The Sound Of Silence
15. Grateful
16. Goodnight, My Love

Best Live Collection 1966-1993 / Simon & Garfunkel
        US CD / circa 1999
        Aquarius 412-S-001

1. The Sound Of Silence (3:42)
2. Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. (2:53)
3. I Am A Rock (2:52)
4. For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her (2:27)
5. Mrs. Robinson (2:56)
6. Homeward Bound (2:31)
7. Fakin' It (3:11)
8. Old Friends/Bookends (3:11)
9. The Boxer (4:32)
10. Bridge Over Troubled Water (5:05)
11. Leaves That Are Green (2:51)
12. So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright (3:06)
13. Bye Bye Love (3:32)
14. America (3:32)
15. Scarborough Fair (3:41)
16. The 59th Street Bridge Song (2:21)
17. The Sound Of Silence (6:33)

This set is a collection of recordings off of several other live discs that appeared on the market over the previous decade. The first four tracks are from Sounds Of Silence Live (1966); tracks 5-8 are from Voices Of Intelligent Dissent (1968); 9-10 are from A Time Of Innocence (1969); 11-13 are from New Yorker In Netherlands' live concert of Simon & Garfunkel in May 1970. I am not sure of the origin of the last four tracks, but I believe that they may have been released on other recordings of Simon & Garfunkel from 1993 (the disc notes that they are U.S. concerts from that year). It's not a bad disc, although if you have the individual sets from which these are taken, there's not much reason to track this one down

Before The Fame / Simon & Garfunkel
        US CD / 18 November 2003
        Alchemy BFTF 182

1. Dream Alone
2. Teenage Fool [Big 614-B]
3. Beat Love [Harmony]
4. I Love You (Oh Yes I Do)
5. Just A Boy [Warwick 588-A]
6. Play Me A Sad Song [Warwick 619-A]
7. It Means A Lot To Them [Warwick 619-B]
8. Flame
9. Shy [Warwick 588-B]
10. The Lone Teen Ranger [Amy 875/Barry 3155X-A]
11. Two Teenagers [Big 616-B]
12. Hey Schoolgirl [Big 613-A]
13. That's My Story [Big 618/Hunt 319-A]
14. (Pretty Baby) Don't Say Goodbye
     [Big 618/Hunt 319-B]
15. Our Song [Big 616-A]

These were singles originally released by Simon & Garfunkel as Tom & Jerry, Jerry Landis, or Artie Garr in the 1950s and early 1960s. A few were perhaps not actually released, but are studio demos by Simon ("Flame,"? "I Love You (Oh Yes I Do)"). The ones known to have been actually released were done so on the respective labels noted in brackets besides them. "Dream Alone" is missing one of the vocal tracks from the original single, which makes the song sound (incorrectly) like it's only three words long.
